Options Beyond Pain Medications and Surgeries

Many people accept and expect limitations because they assume there are no options beyond pain medications and surgeries. Yet, thousands of people around the world have managed to avoid both. And, they actually improve and expand their movement possibilities. Participating in Feldenkrais Method®lessons, either privately, or in Awareness Through Movement® classes, can put you on the road to continuing progress.

Feldenkrais® lessons are not like traditional exercise or therapy. They offer a new way of learning about how you move, and how you move through life. So whether it’s playing music, hiking on a trail, or picking up your grandchild – the Feldenkrais Method can help you to create better quality in everything you enjoy.

Hi Everyone,
I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and I wish you all good things in this Coming Year.
It’s time to reflect on the changes you want to make for the next 12 months. I feel blessed to be able to help you get ready for the new possibilities in 2019.
I am looking forward to resuming my Feldenkrais classes on January 3, to help you to boost your capacity to move effortlessly, helping you recover from injury such as injury to the neck, hips, shoulders, to improve fluidity and ease in sports, recreational activities or life. Body Awareness is Key to Injury Prevention

Body awareness is key to injury prevention.
The more you move the better off you are.
You may ask, “what if the kind of movement you’re doing will become more difficult as you age?”
We often don’t think about the impact of our movements’ habits – how we hold tension in our neck or lower back, how inefficient we breath, how we shovel snow, or even how we run or do yoga. These ‘movements habits’ can contribute to aging dramatically. The dilemma is that old habits can become dangerous to our joints by overstressing ligaments causing strains, injuries, and tears in our muscle.
Body awareness is the key to preventing injuries. Nothing will protect your back or your knees more than having body awareness to know how to move in a protective manner. We need our brains to understand our limits when we exercise so that we do not strain our bodies into injury. Taking Feldenkrais classes will help you with that. These classes are also called Awareness Through Movement.

Private Functional Integration Sessions in Herndon

Do you prefer more of a one-to-one experience of the Feldenkrais Method?

The private sessions that I offer are called Functional Integration®. They are one on one sessions with me and I use gentle, non-invasive touch and verbal instructions to guide you in a personalized movement process.

These functional integration private sessions are used to address individual needs. To do this, I may move your arm, legs, head and trunk in a way that enhances the awareness of movement. I may draw attention to elements such as your breathing or the difference between the two sides of the body.

I communicate to you through gentle touching and movement, and how to move in more expanded functional motor patterns.

Functional Integration is usually performed with the student lying on a table designed specifically for the work. It can also be done with the student in sitting or standing positions. At times, various props are used in an effort to support the person’s body configuration or to facilitate certain movements.

What to expect at a FELDENKRAIS class with Monica Browne

So, you are thinking of taking a FELDENKRAIS classFELDENKRAIS class in Herndon, and you are wondering what to expect.

In this article, I break down the FELDENKRAIS classes into two types.

Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) lessons are taught to groups or individuals. I verbally guide you through a sequence of gentle movements. Usually you will begin by lying on the floor, but some ATM lessons may take place sitting on the floor or in a chair, or standing. Try to avoid eating heavily before your lesson (light snacks are fine), and dress comfortably for movement.

Functional Integration® (FI) lessons are taught to individuals. Dress comfortably for movement. Your lessons may begin with you sitting or lying on a special low, padded table. I guide you by communicating through a gentle, listening touch and movement, as well as with words. (Only Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioners(cm) are authorized to teach Functional Integration lessons.)

In both ATM and FI lessons, you will become more aware of how you move in habitual ways. Each lesson helps you to explore alternatives that you might not have thought of otherwise. Through increased awareness, you learn to move with minimal effort and maximum efficiency. As Moshe Feldenkrais said, “We can… make the impossible, possible; the possible, easy; and the easy, elegant.”
